It is messy fun including the kiddos in on DIY projects. Sure buying a birdseed feeder from the store is simple but making one with your kiddos is SO MUCH FUN!

We made these birdseed feeder shapes with just 3 ingredients.  While making them was a bit messy it sure was great to spend time together.

HOW TO MAKE A BIRDSEED FEEDER

Simple DIY For Kids Birdseed Feeder

What you will need:

3 cups Birdseed (make sure to select a type that is appropriate for birds in your area)
2 packet of unflavored gelatin
3/4 cup water
Wax paper
Cookie cutters or silicon mold of choice
Straws
String

DIRECTIONS

  1. Place three cups of birdseed in a large bowl.
  2. Heat 3/4 cup water in the microwave until hot but not boiling
  3. Add the two gelatin packets and whisk until it’s completely dissolved.
  4. Add the gelatin mixture to the bird seed and stir until all the birdseed is wet.

If you are using cookie cutters place them on a cookie sheet.

Use a spoon and scoop the birdseed into each cookie cutter/silicone mold. Wet your fingers and press the birdseed gently to make sure there are no air pockets. Cut the paper straws and push into each birdseed shape to make a hole for hanging later. Put in the fridge to set for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, gently push the shapes out of the cookie cutter/silicone mold, Flip them over and let them sit out on the counter for another 2 hours or until completely dry. Cut string into 6″-8″ , loop it through the hole once the shapes are completely dry. Tie it onto a branch in your yard.

The fun continues on as you and your kiddos get to now enjoy watching the birds flock to the birdseed feeder you made together!
